Falling in love with someone from another country can be exciting and incredibly romantic. Sometimes it can even be an adventure and learning an entirely new language. As wonderful as falling in love with someone overseas can be, it can also come with plenty of challenges. Whether or not the challenges outweigh the benefits is up to your specific situation. Take a look at some of the pros and cons of falling in love with someone.
Pro: It’s Romantic
Let’s face it, when you compare falling in love with someone in Venice over a glass of chianti and a plate of spaghetti with falling in love over a hot dog in New Jersey, it’s easy to see why the former may be considered more romantic. Foreign love is cinematic and exciting. There are more things to experience, and everything seems new and exciting.
There’s also excitement in trying to figure out how you’ll be able to make it work. In many cases, it may even require hiring an immigration lawyer just to be able to live in the same place— that level of romance can be exciting.
Con: It Can Lead To Culture Clash
When two people come from completely different cultures, what initially may seem charming may eventually drive you crazy. Things that seem new and exciting initially may start to lead to arguments later on. It’s not uncommon for people from male-dominated cultures to have issues accepting gender roles that fall outside of what they were raised with.
Yet, if you’re willing to accept the challenges as a couple and remain open-minded, then it’s possible to overcome culture clashes as they arise. However, it’s important that you anticipate the potential of them happening, so they don’t catch you off guard.
Pro: You’ll Learn About New Foods and Flavors
International romance often is accompanied by delicious new dishes to try out. If you’re not very adventurous in your diet yet, then dating someone from another country is a great excuse to start. If you feel uncomfortable at first, don’t worry, it’s part of the process. Try to keep an open mind and remember that both of you should be open to trying different flavors from each other’s cultures, not just one of you.
Con: It Can Get Pricey
Depending on what side of the world your romantic partner is on, plane tickets can get quite expensive. When there’s a lot of distance to travel back and forth each time you want to see each other, the plane tickets can start to add up quickly.
As you can see, long-distance romance comes with its good parts, and it’s not so good ones. It’s up to you to weigh them out and decide whether you think embracing foreign love is for you or not.
