If you’ve found that the square footage of your home simply isn’t cutting it for you anymore but you don’t want to go through the hassle of having to move to a bigger place, there are things that you can do to add square footage to your home. This way, you can get the room that you need without having to pick up and move to a new place.
To help you learn how this can be done, here are three tips for adding square footage to your home.
Add A Loft
To add square footage or usable space to your current home, you have to have some room available to build into. And for homes that have high ceilings, one great option is to put in a loft into some of that high ceiling space.
In most instances, when you add a loft to your home, you won’t really have to do any demolition or make changes with things like plumbing or your HVAC system. All you have to do is add the flooring for the space that you’re wanting and then make sure that the area is safe and secure for those spending time up there. Lofts are great for adding extra storage for a space, putting in a small area to read or relax, or making an office or study space that doesn’t take up much room.
Expand Over Your Garage
Another area of your property that you can build into to add more square footage to your home is the area over your garage.
If you have a garage that’s attached to your home and there currently isn’t anything built above the garage, adding a new story here can be a great option. And because the foundation for this area is already taken care of, all you need to worry about is putting up the walls and adding a new roof. Depending on what you’re wanting to use this space for, you may need to add fixtures for plumbing, electrical, and HVAC to make the space comfortable and usable.
Create Enclosed Outdoor Space
If you have outdoor space on your property that you aren’t currently using, you may want to consider enclosing this space and using it to add square footage to your home. Especially if it already comes right up to your home, like a deck or patio space, enclosing this area can give you a lot more space to work with in your home.
Depending on what you want to use this space for and how much money and effort you want to put into weatherizing this area, you may want to use an enclosed outdoor space for specific purposes like storage or as a gathering place when the weather is nice.
If you want to add more usable space to the square footage of your home, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you learn how to do this.
